The engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine for combustion. The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes into the interior through the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.
The cabin air filter uses a surgical-grade paper that catches much smaller particles than the engine air filter, filtering out fine dust and pollen. Some filters are carbon-activated to reduce the smog and diesel particulates you're breathing sitting in traffic.
A dirty cabin air filter can make your car smell and irritate allergies or other respiratory problems.
We recommend replacing the cabin air and engine air filters every 12,000 or 15,000 miles, but if you drive in heavy traffic with poor air quality, you should replace more often.
Check out this short video from Mighty Auto Parts that explains what your cabin air filter does.

Most cabin air filters are located behind the glove box. Some are easy to replace, others may involve removing the glove box to gain access.
